SARAH-JANE SUMMERS (SOLO)
TRADITIONAL FIDDLE / COMPOSITION

"dazzling folk virtuoso" (The Strad)

A tradition-bearer of the old Highland style of Scottish fiddling, Sarah-Jane Summers was taught by the late, great Donald Riddell (1908-1992), who learnt his fiddling from a relative of hers, Alexander Grant of Battangorm (1856-1942). Now based in Norway, she has a masters degree from The Norwegian State Academy of Music.

Sarah-Jane's extremely diverse skills on fiddle, viola and Hardanger fiddle have led her to perform at rock, jazz, folk, country, contemporary, noise/experimental festivals worldwide with artists as diverse as fiddle-quartet RANT, Julie Fowlis, Quatuor Bozzini, and top Norwegian pop band Highasakite.

On SOLO, Sarah-Jane returned to her roots, delivering a top-level album of hardcore fiddling at its absolute best:

5/5 The Scotsman

"A phenomenal collection of music, true solo fiddle with no safety net, this is hard core Scottish fiddling from one of the best." (Folkworld)

VIRR, her album of free improvisations on viola and fiddle, was Fiona Talkington's Album of the Year, BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, alongside names such as Björk and Kendrick Lamar:

"a howling gale, brilliantly evoked" (The Wire)

An experienced educator, she loves teaching young and old alike, has taught and given talks worldwide, has released a tuition DVD, and is passionate about people finding their own musical voice.
